Building Homes or Extensions/studs and drywall

Question
I am adding a new wall within the present master bathroom.  Is it necessary to remove the ceiling drywall between the ceiling plate of the new wall and the ceiling joists that are located above the drywall.  If the removal is unnecessary, then, I will not disturb the integrity of the vapour barrier above the drywall.

Answer
Hi barry, it's not necessary to remove the ceiling drywall if your joists are crossing the new wall or if you have a joist directly above the new wall so that you can tie the top of the new wall to the existing structure.  Otherwise you may need to take out at least enough drywall on the existing ceiling to install blocking or other means to secure the top of the new wall to the structure.  I hope this information helps please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
