Building Homes or Extensions/Master bath design

Question
I am designing a master bath with limited space. I'm planning to install a whirlpool bath which will also function as a shower stall, as in a bathtub/shower combo. Is this a major faux pas?

Answer
Robert,

If this is a design for yourself or a particular client, I would try to design for the particular needs of the user.  It is possible that having a whirlpool tub is a high priority, perhaps for therapeutic reasons, and should be worked into the design at all costs.  But, as you imply, using a whirlpool bath as part of a tub/shower combo does compromise both functions.  The shower will be more difficult to access, and harder to clean, than a walk-in shower or a combo with standard/low tub.  The whirlpool tub with shower will necessarily have limited/no deck surround, and a curtain or door, both of which may create a claustrophobic feeling when using the tub.  It will also be hard to include windows adjacent to the tub.

I would try hard in the design to include two separate functions - shower, and bath.  If this is impossible, you'll need to prioritize needs.  Many folks these days are choosing a really nice walk-in shower (think bench, maybe steam, frameless glass...), used daily, and forgoing the seldom-used whirlpool tub.

Good luck with your design.
