Building Homes or Extensions/adding a second floor

Question
I live in Indiana and I am in the near future planning on adding a second floor to our cement slab floor home.   We have been told that this cannot be done. We have a 30 yr. old home which is 1200 sq. feet. Have not contacted a contractor yet, just curious what your thoughts are.

Answer
Dolly, I can't imagine why anyone would have told you that it cannot be done.  You will need to verify the footing size that you have now to verify that it is large enough to carry the additional weight.  This is usually not  a problem, but could be a major expense if it is not.

Timing becomes a major issue on this type project as the existing roof needs to taken off.  If you intend to stay in the home while this project is going on there will be some real tough gambles.  Contact a local contractor to discuss the possibilities and issues. He (sexist remark, isn't it!) may have some good alternatives or suggestions.

Please be conscientious about his time and make it clear that you appreciate his expertise and seek his advice as to feasibility, but do NOT expect him to invest major time for free.
