Question
Remodeling mstr bath on 2nd floor of 2-story built 1975. Large shower, and new floor consists of 1700 lbs. of tile. Is this load too heavy? Room size 7 1/2 x 12'(90 sq.ft) floor joists 8" located 16 off cntr. 12' long. bulk of weight is inside shower - size is 7 1/2' x 3 1/2' located in corner of 2 outside walls. remainder of weight is in the entire floor. Thank you, I'm really concerned.

Answer
Sam, the weight isn't bad.  1700/90SF is about 20 lbs/SF.  The floor was probably designed for 40 lbs/SF.  The part that worries me is the deflection in the joists.  Good dense select structural yellow pine joists that are 2x8 on 16" centers at l/600 deflection should not span over 11'-6".  I don't know what type lumber you have and I don't really know what deflection limits your tile requires.  #2 YP with l/360 deflection can go over 12'.  Do some more checking on the actual lumber grade used for the joists and check with the tile manufacturer on deflection, but I suspect it will be l/600.
