Building Homes or Extensions/How to frame an uneven wall

Question
How do I frame a wall that is 72 inches tall at one end and 104 inches tall at the other end?

Answer
John, there would be several choices.  I'm not sure, but I am guessing you are adding a wall in an existing space.
Method 1.  Measure the total run of the wall in inches.  Let's assume it is exactly 12' which is 144".  Your total change is 32", so each inch must change 32/144= .22222 which is pretty close to a 1/4".  If your studs will be on 16" centers each stud will be 16 x .2222= 3.55 inches longer.  This method will also let you calculate the angle of the cut on the top of the studs.  The long point of each stud will be .222 x 1.5 = .33333" longer than the short side.  I'm not in my shop, but I would guess this to be close to 5° adjust as required, but a minor variation won't hurt anything.

Method 2.  Find a driveway, garage floor, patio or similar and lay out the wall in the flat.  Maker sure your corners are square and your stud markings are accurate.  Measure each stud on the "pattern".

Method 3.  Build the wall in rectangular sections.  Make a short section of wall at your 72.  Stand it and install it.  Measure up to the ceiling and build a section at that new height, etc.  This is not the most professional way, but it will get the job done.

If I've not made this clear enough, please write again.  If you know the pitch of the roof it is possible to do another way, but I hope this gives you what you need.
