Building Homes or Extensions/Door Locks

Question
Hi. I got a new lock today, and the bolt (if it's the part that slides into the door frame) is too long. It looks like it is twice as long as our old one. Do all locks have bolts that long now?

Thanks

Answer
Hi KC, it's common now for deadbolts and standard door locks to be adjustable to fit different back sets.  It's possible that your door backset is different from your lock backset and that is making the bolt too long.  See if there is an adjustment on the bolt to crank it back to the shorter backset and see if that helps.  It is also possible that you may need to drill your jamb side of the door opening to accommodate a deeper throw on your dead bolt.  Some "security" type dead bolts do have a longer throw for a more secure lock.  Follow the manufacturers recommendations for installing.  I hope this information helps, please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
