Building Homes or Extensions/Drywall in a polebarn

Question
Hi Bruce
I have a 30'by 40' pole barn that the previous owner started but didn't finish. It is of the post in the ground type. The roof is on.It is shingled. The trusses are spaced at two foot.I will be pouring a concrete floor as soon as weather permits.I am going to use two by six's for the walls so i can use thicker insulation. The ceiling will probably be blown in.I will put a modine gas heater in it and probably be doing a lot of welding in it but it wont be heated all the time.Only when i want to work out there.I live in northern Michigan. My friends tell me to use OSB because drywall will sag.I want to use drywall because it's cheaper, looks better and is more fireproof. What do you think about using drywall?
Thank you very much

Answer
Hi Terry, drywall will be okay if done properly and the humidity in the building isn't too high for too long.  Your winters are generally freezing which means that the moisture is on the ground most of the time instead of in the air which is good.  I would recommend using a 5/8"-X type of drywall for your ceilings and walls instead of 1/2" and you can get drywall now without paper on it which keeps the mildew problem at bay..it costs a little bit more but in your case it would be worth the few extra bucks since you are not conditioning the space all the time.  I hope this information helps please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
