Question
I live in a small colonial in Connecticut it was build in 1875. I would like to know can you give me some information concerning the structural elements about this type of home.

Answer
Hi suzanne, I don't know what information you are seeking.  Most older homes such as yours were built with rough hewn lumber.  If it is two story it was probably balloon framed which means the studs go all the way from the first floor through to the roof structure and the second floor joists sit on a ribbon board attached to the studs.  The roof is hand framed and your ceiling joists are not integral to the rafter structure unless they are used as collar ties for an attic space.  Foundations of that era can be concrete, masonry, brick or stone depending on your area and most floor systems are joists sitting on beams which are supported by posts.   I hope this information helps please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
