Building Homes or Extensions/outer ceiling joist repair

Question
Hi.
While replacing some damaged hardboard siding I came upon some old severe termite damage on the ceiling joist/rim joist on the outside edge of the wall.

This is a sistered joist and the termites destroyed about 16" length of the outer and about 4" length of the inner. The damage is contained in this one spot.

I am going to have to remove the damaged portion of both and splice new ones in after I re-support the roof rafters. I plan to remove the damaged material and splice at least 4' #four feet# either side of the damage.

Being an outside plate I can only sister on one side.

I plan to use lag bolts on 4" centers in a zig zag pattern.

What am I missing and is this even safely allowable?

Mark

Answer
Hi Mark, just make sure to stagger your splices as well which should be easy enough with the inside damage being so small you can offset the two pieces  a couple of feet.  I hope this information helps please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
