Building Homes or Extensions/volunteers & donations
Expert: Bruce E. Johnson - 6/10/2011
QuestionQUESTION: Hello Mr. Johnson,
I refinanced my home in 2009 to add an additional bedroom suite for me and my soon to be ex-husband. Somehow the money is all gone and all I have standing is frame work and rafters that were put and then taken back down for reasons, I don't know. The frame has been like this for 2 years now, I have watched shows(Extreme Home Makeover, Holmes on Homes)on TV of how people come in and help neighbors in need and wondered how this can be done? I have someone willing to help but we need more help and supplies, do you have any info you could share?
Your help would most appreciative.

ANSWER: Hi deborah, You might try contacting Holmes on Homes through his website and see if your situation warrants him doing a show based on your problems. Normally he comes in and fixes stuff that shady contractors don't do properly or leave unfinished. I don't have enough information as to why your project wasn't completed to give much more advice than that. You don't mention who did the work originally or why your money ran out. If it is a shady contractor who took your money and didn't complete the work you may have recourse within your state or county or city to file a lien against the builder and try to get your money back that way..sincerely bruce johnson

QUESTION: Thank you for your response. It was my husband that misused the money. I basically need resources to find volunteers to work and material donations at this point.
Thanks
Deborah
AnswerHi again deborah, never underestimate the power of the press. If the story isn't too embarrassing to talk about you might try getting some local exposure from the newspaper. This might spur someone to donate. Another option might be your local church or neighborhood associations, if you have any military background the Veterans associations are often helpful, Knights of Columbus, Elks, Masons, even your city or county may have a program available to help. It never hurts to ask. good luck, sincerely bruce johnson
