Building Homes or Extensions/moving an exterior wall

Question
I am wanting to expand my kitchen by bumping out part of my exterior wall by about 3 feet. The span to be bumped out would be 17 feet, 7 of which is already bumped out with a bay window area where our breakfast table is. The kitchen sink is also along this wall, so plumbing would be involved. My house is two story framed construction. The expansion would be onto my back porch, which is decked and is roofed. Our home is built on a slab. I am getting ready to call some contractors to get estimates but wanted to see if this is something that is even possible and within reason before doing so. Please advise and also, should I consult an architect prior to a contractor or will a contractor be sufficient? Thanks for any advice on this matter.

Answer
Hi Mary, anything is possible if there is enough money involved.  An architect or structural engineer will be needed for your building permit so you might want to get them involved sooner than later.  However a reliable contractor can help lead you in the right direction and discuss methods of accomplishing what you want to do and even help with your initial design basics prior to getting an architect involved.  There are even contractors that are architects or engineers which can provide you with a one stop shopping experience, so to speak.  Call around and get some preliminary estimates, they are free and can be helpful in formulating ideas regarding your particular project.  I hope this info helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters sincerely Bruce Johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
