Question I have an 1860's home with part of the porch header to replace. The posts are 12ft apart and the relacement needed is 16ft starting from a corner post. The old header was 2-3/4 X 9-1/4. Can I use 2-2X10 PT butt jointed to the original header and another 2X10X16 centered over that joint from behind? I'll adjust the finish trim from behind. I would glue and screw this assy together. Is this atleast as good as original? We do have significant snow here. A roof leak before I owned the house caused a wet condition and carpenter ants did the rest.
Answer hi Charles without seeing it, it sounds like it will work. You will end up with at least as much support as the original builder intended and that worked for 140 years..you seem to have a good handle on what is needed I hope this info helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters sincerely Bruce Johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
