Question
Roof
Roof
I'm removing the old porch roof and part of an existing roof of my home.what I'm looking for is a header size that will hold the wait of the hole roof.the span is about 12x20 (the rest will sit on my existing outside wall of my home)Also i was think about using 4x4 post but not sure if it will hold the weight.I'm sending a picture of the addition that was put on. basically I'm going to make the old side of the roof look like the addition. Also the porch header will be risen to the height of the existing outside wall. Right now the porch roof is to low so i would like to keep the header at the least possible width for head room

Answer
Hi Eugene , to span 20 feet and support a roof load will require at least a double LVL (laminated) beam each piece 13/4"x 18"..contact your local lumber yard or truss manufacturing plant for further specs.  As far as the posts go 4x4 embedded in a wall with an additional 2x4added to it or a 4x6 post should be used
