Building Homes or Extensions/Slab/ water

Question
I purchased a house with a bathroom in the basement.  when installing the tub, whoever broke the concrete floor to allow access to the tub fixtures.  now, when ever we get a big rain ground water flows up through the hole and potentially could flood the basement.  the hole is about 8 inches wide,  about 4" deep and 6" long.  was thinking of partially filling it with concrete but then any access to the fixtures would be really restricted. any suggestions, thanks?

Answer
Hi Jim your foundation should have a perimeter drain to keep the groundwater from getting under the floor to begin with.  However, short of installing a new drain you can try filling the hole with non shrink grout.  I wouldn't worry about the access to the plumbing drain unless you plan on having plumbing problems on a regular basis.  Another option would be expanding foam.  It comes in a can, just shoot it in and let it fill up the hole.  I hope this info helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely Bruce Johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
