Building Homes or Extensions/Building a ground level deck

Question
Hi Bruce, I am wanting to construct a ground level timber deck as an extension to our existing concrete and tiled patio. Our patio slab was poured with the existing house and therefore the termite barrier is external to the slab. Question: Do I need to join the timber deck to the concrete slab or can the deck be free standing and butt up to the deck? If it needs to be joined to the slab, what is the best way to do this and what can I do in relation to the termite barrier? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Sandy, you can butt the new deck addition up to the concrete pad no problem and if the deck is built properly to support its own weight then there is no need to attach the two together.   Termite treatment of the new deck area shouldn't be a problem if you use a good pressure treated wood made for contact with the ground.  The treated wood has it's termite treatment built into it. I hope this info helps, please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
