Question
My house is 32 years old and I have lally columns in the basement t that look like they are bleeding. What would cause that and are they safe?

Answer
Hi Joe, it sounds like you have a moisture problem and condensation is collecting on the columns and causing rust.  Do you have a dehumidifier or air-conditioning in the basement?  Perhaps your foundation walls or basement floor are seeping moisture raising the humidity levels down there.  Are they safe? Unless they are totally eaten away by the rust they should be okay but if water has been standing at their base for any length of time you might want to check where your column touches the floor.  Tap on the column with a hammer if it is soft then the column needs to be replaced, the rust has eaten up the structural integrity.  If it rings hard then the column is still sound.I hope this info helps please feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely Bruce Johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
