Building Homes or Extensions/Adding a 2' extension

Question
We're in Calgary, AB, and have a 10 year old house on a nice, wide lot. Wondering about the feasibility of cutting out an 8' high by 10' wide opening in an exterior wall, and adding a new extension about 2' deep to accomodate a wall unit, tv, and gas fireplace. This would be on a side wall, with the joists running front to back, so a cantilever wouldn't be feasible. It's also a bi-level house, so I don't think it would be feasible to add a concrete slab to support the new extension. Hopefully joist hangers and some additional angle supports on the exterior would be sufficient. Worth it or not?? DIY (fairly skilled) or professional job? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Rick,

This addition will require a building permit and to get this you will have to show how you intend to support the structure without a cantilever. A slab will move with frost but piers may be an option otherwise consult an engineer. The job itself is not a big one but needs to be done properly to avoid devaluing your home.
Thank's
Michael
