Building Homes or Extensions/CONCRETE

Question
My home in baltimore, md had concrete stairs put outside the front door (4 steps)last year. Is there any chemical liquid I can put on it to make it less likely to crack or get worn by the weather? Would painting it be advisable from the standpoint of making it more weather resistant? Would walking over the paint once it has dried completely  make it fade or peel away quickly over time? If painting is advisable what brand would you recomend and does it come with a variety of colors. Thanks

Answer
Concrete often forms hairline cracks over time as it cures.  This is normal, and once the concrete has been poured, can't be prevented.  If you are looking to dress up the steps, I'd recommend an acid etch type of stain.  These are available online, and can achieve great looking results in a variety of colors.  I'd stay away from paint as it does not penetrate (as acid stain will) and would become a maintenance problem.
