Building Homes or Extensions/CONCRETE

Question
My home in baltimore, md had concrete stairs put outside the front door (4 steps)last year. Is there any chemical liquid I can put on it to make it less likely to crack or get worn by the weather? Would painting it be advisable from the standpoint of making it more weather resistant? Would walking over the paint once it has dried completely  make it fade or peel away quickly over time? If painting is advisable what brand would you recomend and does it come with a variety of colors. Thanks

Answer
Al,

You can apply a concrete sealer, which is a clear coating meant to limit the amount of water the concrete absorbs.  Be sure to use the type for old concrete.

Or, you can use a masonry floor paint.  DryLok makes a nice paint that works in traffic areas, and is available in many colors.  Be aware, however, that painted outdoor concrete can be slippery, so you may want to add some non-slip grit to the paint prior to using.

The longevity of the paint depends on weather exposure, traffic intensity, and the quality of the initial bond.  Be sure to follow mfrs instructions.

Best of luck and let me know if you have additional questions.
