Building Homes or Extensions/Installing a window

Question
Ted,
I am installing a window in a block wall. I noticed that you recommended 6"x6"x3/16" metal for the size but my question is how far should the metal span either side of the window opening? The window I am installing is going to be egress rated according to local code...approximately 4' in width.

Answer
It depends on several factors.  Here is a reference to get you started doing the calculation: www.brickinfo.org/BIA/technotes/TN31B.pdf

If you don't have any unusual point loads or other issues, 6" bearing each side is probably safe.  If you have any doubt hire an engineer for an hour or two - they are always worth the cost.  Good luck.
