Building Homes or Extensions/Ledger Board

Question
I want to mount a ledger board to a vinyl sided house about 12' above grade.  What steps are required?  Do I remove a section of siding?  If so how do I assure the area is waterproof after mounting the ledger?

Answer
Hi Mike,
Yes you should remove some siding in that area. Put your ledger on.  Then a flashing needs to be applied from the sheathing out over the ledger and down about an inch onto the face of it. ideally, before the siding is replaced there should be some flashing or watershield on the wall that lays down over the first flashing.
You'll need some "j" channel when your siding is re-applied.
Good luck...
