Building Homes or Extensions/Space

Question
First off, let me tell you that I know very little about framing. I am going to frame my basement off and was wondering, is there any codes on how much space I need to leave around the furnace? Also were do I look for my towns codes on home building.

Answer
Robert,

Yes, there are code required clearances.  The 2006 International Building Code is in effect in most of the US, however frequently with amendments at the state or local level.  You should contact your town's code official (this could be the "Building Department", "Inspector", "Permits", etc.) to find out what code is in effect.

The 2006 IBC states in section M1402.2:
"Clearances shall be provided in accordance with the listing and the manufacturer's installation instructions."

In addition to code-required clearances, be sure to leave enough access to easily replace the furnace at the end of its life.

Good luck with your basement.
