Question
I am designing  a small recreation cabin, 12x20 plus a deck, for Tok Alaska. The foundation will use pier blocks to hold 4x10 beams. The 2x8 floor joists can be hung on these beams or set on top of the beams. Other than the height of the floor, is there a structural advantage or disadvantage to using hangers?

Answer
Scott,

Hangers are used when the design calls for the joists to be flush with the beam/ledger/etc.  They are more labor intensive and more expensive than simply setting the joists on the beam.  They are slightly less sound than direct bearing, since they rely on nails (which can be the wrong type/size/etc.), they rely on the skill of the installer, and they can corrode.

If the overall design is well served by placing the joists on top, then I recommend that route.  Otherwise, use hangers per code and mfrs instructions.

Good luck and let me know if you have additional questions.
