Building Homes or Extensions/bulkheads over ducts

Question
Are bulkheads necessary in homes to cover heating duct or can they be avoided and how?

Answer
Hi Teresa,

Bulkheads are necessary when ducts run in the opposite direction from the joists. They can be minimized and many builders don't use them. If the architect knows there are to be no bulkheads, they will draw the plans to try to eliminate them.

Thanks,
Michael.
