Building Homes or Extensions/electrical box

Question
Hi, I have a 125 amp max breaker box that has a date on it of 1971. I recently tried to add a older used home theater system and my relative said my box was too small. I also don't have a dishwasher and will be adding that soon in my home. Is my breaker box too small and do I have to have an electrician change out a whole new box.

Answer
Kathy,

Unless you have electric heat, 125 amps of capacity should be sufficient for a typical residence.  However if you have a large house and/or a large family, have an electric dryer, electric range, and air conditioning, you may be approaching the capacity of the service.

It is best to have an electrician evaluate your usage and develop recommendations from that.  A home theatre and a dishwasher are moderate loads on an electrical system, but typically aren't enough to justify a new service.

Also, the electrician will look at the integrity of the system.  Older breakers and panels, and aluminum wiring, are  among the issues that could cause problems going forward.  That's why it's best to have a pro look over your system.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.
