Building Homes or Extensions/fireplace

Question
Hi, we have a older home and inside our living room is a fireplace mantel, It is a non working unit that I believe has a pipe going through it from our basement for the furnace. Does this make sense? If so can these be torn out?

Answer
You can certainly remove the fireplace front and mantel, no matter what.  If the chimney is being used by any appliances or devices, they will need an alternate flue in order to remove the chimney.  Devices that may be connected would be furnace and hot water tank.  The masonry carries the load of the chimney, it will need to be removed from the top down.
