Building Homes or Extensions/removing wall

Question
Hi Ted.
I have a wall that I would like to remove between my kitchen and what I am going to make my formal dining room.  Even though my house was built in 1982, the wall in question is a load bearing wall.  My question is, what do I need to do to support the open space I am wanting to create by taking out this wall?  I have some carpentry skills but not too detailed.  Thanks for your expertise.

Answer
This is a big job for a do-it-yourselfer.  A properly sized header or beam will need to be installed, which is supported in an appropriate way (normally columns) to bring loads down all the way to the foundation.  In some cases you would need new pier footings at these points.  I recommend that you hire an engineer to size your structure and specify hangers, nailing schedules, foundation amendment, etc.  Then you can decide whether you are comfortable going forward yourself.  Good luck.
