Building Homes or Extensions/room in attic

Question
Hi Dave
Im looking to build an extra room in the attic. There are 2x4 supports that run in a 'V' shape from the floor joist to the roof. Are these for roof support or floor joist support? Can I reangle them from the 'V' pattern to just straight up & down? thanks so much Tim

Answer
Wow, Tim thats a tough one. It depends a lot on the spacing, size and span of the floor joists.
The supports you mentioned are for the joists, they are needed. You can in a lot of cases relocate them as you suggest. You need to put in ceiling joists (or collar ties) at you new ceiling height.Mail me back with some dimensions...of your joists sizes/spacing.span  and the rafter spacing as well....
