Question
i own a single family house which was built 1925 with an extension at the back built 1978,it is an up and down design extension with stair located outside the house and this is the only way  in order to access the first floor.is it considered an R1 category or do i need to enclosed the stair so it will be part of the house

Answer
Hi Michelle,
I am in central Maine, and have no way of knowing your local/state codes. Here, if it is a rental, most cities require enclosed stairways.
I would suggest you go to your city code enforcement office and inquire. If you are trying to avoid contact with them, try and find out from a local contractor.
Best of luck,
Dave
