About Kenneth Joergensen
Expertise
Can answer questions about spring and summer bulbs: selection, soil preparation, planting, fertilizing, designing with bulbs. I can also give references where to buy the bulbs and how to store them. Besides the typical bulbs (tulips, daffodils, amaryllis, lilies etc) I can also answer questions about other geophytes, such as tuberous begonia, dahlias, etc. When to start indoors, light requirement, etc. My experience is in cool season areas, but I can answer questions about warm season areas if given time to research matter.

Experience
Have worked with various bulbs (spring and summer bulbs). I am presently an allexpert advicer on the lawn message board also.

Bulbs - Hyacinths

Expert: Kenneth Joergensen - 3/20/2005

Question
I bought a white flowering hyacinth in a 4" pot. It has two stalks. I've left the dead, now dried flowers in place, and just water the plant that sits on a south facing window sill. The flowers smelled great and were very pretty. I wonder if it is possible to get this plant to continue to flower?
Thanks!

Answer
Hyacinths bloom once per year in spring. After last chance of frost, you can put the pot outdoors for a few days in a sheltered position and then you can plant the contents in the ground. Next year, the hyacinth will flower again outdoors.

Right now, deadhead (cut the spent flower scape off) and continue to grow the leaves green in the sunny window. If you have not fertilized, adding a tsp of a pelleted flowering plant fertilizer will be a good idea. Next spring, fertilize again outdoors.
