Bulbs/Planting Amaryllis bulbs

Question
Hi- I live in South Florida (Boyton Beach, near West Palm Beach) and I wondered if I could successfully grow Amaryllis outdoors in my garden. We just had the front of our house re-landscaped and it was suggested to me to plant them but I'm not sure about the heat, rain, etc. Any advise you could supply would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Fran

Answer
Yes, you should be able to grow Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) bulbs outdoors all year round in Boyton Beach.

Plant so the top half of the bulb sticks out of the ground. Place in full sun, or mostly sun, and water in well (try to to damage or cut large white plump roots. brown dried roots can be cut back or removed).

Fertilize your plants regularily through the summer using 10-10-10 or a regular annual plant fertilizer.

Expertise

Can answer questions about spring and summer bulbs: selection, soil preparation, planting, fertilizing, designing with bulbs. I can also give references where to buy the bulbs and how to store them. Besides the typical bulbs (tulips, daffodils, amaryllis, lilies etc) I can also answer questions about other geophytes, such as tuberous begonia, dahlias, etc. When to start indoors, light requirement, etc. My experience is in cool season areas, but I can answer questions about warm season areas if given time to research matter.

Experience

Have worked with various bulbs (spring and summer bulbs). I am presently an allexpert advicer on the lawn message board also.
