Bulbs/Tulips in Memphis
Expert: Eric Barninger - 8/4/2007
QuestionQUESTION: I just got back from Amsterdam and brought some "Happy Generation" Tulip bulbs with me. (They are red and white striped on the box). I don't know what I was thinking - maybe the cafes clouded my decision-making abilities because I don't know how to grow anything. I recently killed a cactus, a bamboo plant, AND a bonsai - hard to believe, but I managed it.
So my question is - is it possible to grow tulips in Memphis. If so, when, where, and how?
ANSWER: Hi Julia
Hope you had fun in Amsterdam. The Happy Generation tulip is a very beautiful tulip, It blooms in late spring. Yes you can grow tulips in memphis, in full sun to partial shade. You have to plant them in the fall so they can get ready for the big bloom next season. Now me, I normally plant my bulbs 4 to 6 inches in the ground (I have squirrels that do alot of digging in my neck of the woods lol)plant them with the"eye" to the sky and the flat part sitting in the dirt.I space mine 4 to 8 inches apart. After you have planted your bulbs give them a nice big drink of water, and make sure the area u planted them in stays moist. That way you will get them a nice good start for next year.
Hope this helps and don't worry I'm always here if you need me
sincerely

QUESTION: Eric,
Thanks so much for your quick reply! You make it sound so easy! I was wondering if I need to do anything with the bulbs until the fall. Also, is there a particular time during the fall that is best for planting (i.e. certain temperature, before/after rain, at halftime during a football game, etc). Thanks again!
AnswerHi Julia
All you have to do is keep the bulbs in a cool dry place til the fall.
I prefer to plant mine around late October early November. Thats about the best time.
If you have anymore questions feel free to write.....ok
have a good day
