Bulbs/april planting

Question
Hi, we want to give away bulbs next April as a wedding favor (Ohio, Zone 5).  What do you recommend as a bulb that can be planted at that time of year?

Answer
Try summerflowering bulbs to be planted the following May (after last chance of frost) such as caladium, begonia (tuberous), dahlia, or cannas. You can also give away lilies (lilium) which can be planted right away (april) and will flower soon after.

A bag of 50-100 lilies can be purchased at a reasonable pprice online. Asiatic lilies are easiest to grow, colorful and cheapest. Oriental lilies have larger, fragrant flowers (some say they are more beautiful) but costs a bit more, too.

Expertise

Can answer questions about spring and summer bulbs: selection, soil preparation, planting, fertilizing, designing with bulbs. I can also give references where to buy the bulbs and how to store them. Besides the typical bulbs (tulips, daffodils, amaryllis, lilies etc) I can also answer questions about other geophytes, such as tuberous begonia, dahlias, etc. When to start indoors, light requirement, etc. My experience is in cool season areas, but I can answer questions about warm season areas if given time to research matter.

Experience

Have worked with various bulbs (spring and summer bulbs). I am presently an allexpert advicer on the lawn message board also.
