QuestionQUESTION: Can canna's after bloom be divided, and if so, how?
ANSWER: Hi Sal:
The answer is yes, you can divide them anytime, but the best time is in the spring(that way they get put into the ground sooner. but they really aren't to fussy about that.
Take the canna ryzome and clip of any old foliage, and then split them so where the ryzome's have one or more good eyes on them (eyes are the spots where they grow new growth. replant them, water and feed them and you should have more cannas........hope this helped you
Any more questions, feel free to ask, have a good day

QUESTION: Eric, really taking advantage of your expertise, and I appreciate it very much.
Re Hydrangeas, I understand they bloom off "old Wood", if so, when is the proper time to prune, and how much should be pruned?.
Thanks again for all of your help.
ANSWER: Hi Sal
You take advantage all you want, thats what I am here for.
Anyway back to your question,,,,Yes they do bloom on "old wood" and sometimes carry the flower buds through winter, but if it's a really bad winter (coooooold)most often than not the buds will dye. and If you prune them in fall or spring, than your removing buds.
In spring wait til you see new growth, then prune off dead stems, always prune above the node.If they do require pruning, the best time is early to mid August, just after full bloom. don't forget just prune them back to a node.
I hope this was helpful....you know where to find me if you need anything else.......

QUESTION: RE: Sedum, can they also be divided after bloom, know they require sun, however, will they thrive in part sun?. Also, can they be planted in containers?. Thank you.
AnswerHi Sal'
Thanks for another great question, yes you can plant sedum in containers but they need strong light, Propagation is by leaf or stem cuttings or by division. It is vital to let the cuttings dry for a day or 2 before inserting in compost. Water very sparingly and do not cover with polythene or glass.
In the summer some shade may be necessary, but what they normally like is semi shade to sunny.
hope this helped
