Question
When is the right time to fertilize lillies?  Last yr. my flowers were huge, this year not so hot!  What fertilizer is best?  Thanks, Mary

Answer
Mary,
It depends on what type you have. The Asiatic and Oriental lilies can go years without dividing. You can use a time release granular fertilizer like Osmocote or water soluble Miracle Gro. But if you have the rapid spreading Daylilies or Tiger lilies they often need to be divided about every 3 years for improved size of bloom and longer bloom time. You don't need to wait too long before dividing because they become more difficult to dig up and slice through the roots.
