Question
Hi, Kenneth: Could you tell me when and how to split those bulbs and store them, and when to plant them? I live in zone 7. My iris are blooming now and daffodils have passed away.
Thank you in advance.
Aaron

Answer
Iris and daffodil bulbs can be left in the ground. you do not need to store them.

Dig daffodils and wash the soil off. seperate small bulbs from large bulbs. small bulbs can be discharded. larger bulbs should be replanted in soil amended with compost and/or humus and watered in. replant with proper spacing/dept.

same procedure for dutch iris (bulbs). german (or bearded) iris (rhizomes) should be left alone. if overgrown, dig and cut out the brown unproductive part in the middle and replant. do this right after blooming.

Expertise

Can answer questions about spring and summer bulbs: selection, soil preparation, planting, fertilizing, designing with bulbs. I can also give references where to buy the bulbs and how to store them. Besides the typical bulbs (tulips, daffodils, amaryllis, lilies etc) I can also answer questions about other geophytes, such as tuberous begonia, dahlias, etc. When to start indoors, light requirement, etc. My experience is in cool season areas, but I can answer questions about warm season areas if given time to research matter.

Experience

Have worked with various bulbs (spring and summer bulbs). I am presently an allexpert advicer on the lawn message board also.
