Question
I have seen a  plant, I think it is a bulb.  It has log stems with pom pom like flowers which are purple/mauve,  I think they can get to about a metre tall.  The name possibly sounds like allysium but it's not that.

Answer
Belinda,
You are describing the largest of the Alliums, which are in the ornamental onions family. I believe it is called "Globemaster" in the bulb catalogs. You plant them in the fall with Tulips and Daffodils.I haven't seen them for sell in Garden centers but I will give you some references to look at on the web.
