Bulbs/When do I plant bulbs??

Question
I live in Kansas City, MO (transitional zone?) and recently moved into my first house. I received some bulbs from my grandma and also have some I bought on sale. My question is... when do I put them in the ground to grow? I noticed there are some bulbs coming up from the last owner---can I put my new bulbs in the ground now? I have daffodil, hyacinth, and tulip bulbs. Also, now long do the blooms last? And do you have to take the bulbs out of the ground?

Thank you for your time!

Answer
SUSIE,
It's best to plant spring blooming bulbs in the fall. They need a 8 to 10 week dormant period to store the right nutrients in the bulb for reproduction and bloom. If you plant them now they will not bloom this spring and it could waste their energy trying to produce green foliage.Save your bulbs in a cool dry place until fall.In the meantime, you can plan where you want to plant them. It's best in a new garden to just watch and learn about the plants that are already there and what chores need to be done first. You will have plenty of time to plant when you prepare your beds and get used to the soil composition. You will,no doubt have some work on your hands just weeding and doing maintenance on your new place. When fall arrives you will then be able to see where you want your new bulbs and plants to be placed.Have fun, adventure is on it's way to your new garden! If I did not answer your questions with this reply, don't hesitate to que me again!
