Question
Hi Kenneth
I live on the South Shore of Long Island, NY, and I wanted to know when is the right time to plant my gladiolus bulbs?

Also, please let me know which planting zone I'm in.  I have no idea...

thank you!

Answer
Long Island is a bit difficult to determine zoning for because there are so many; ranging from 5 to 7 which in terms of planting tender plants mean a world of difference.

For Bay Shore, Long Island, however (I know the Econo Lodge on Main Street there) it would be zone 6B which means you can plant in 3rd - 4th week of April.

That is, the tubers can be planted in the ground as long as it is not frozen, and then the ground should be covered by a 3" layer of mulch. The tubers will then grow when the soil warms up.

Expertise

Can answer questions about spring and summer bulbs: selection, soil preparation, planting, fertilizing, designing with bulbs. I can also give references where to buy the bulbs and how to store them. Besides the typical bulbs (tulips, daffodils, amaryllis, lilies etc) I can also answer questions about other geophytes, such as tuberous begonia, dahlias, etc. When to start indoors, light requirement, etc. My experience is in cool season areas, but I can answer questions about warm season areas if given time to research matter.

Experience

Have worked with various bulbs (spring and summer bulbs). I am presently an allexpert advicer on the lawn message board also.
