Question
Hi,
I have some beauitful irises but they are really spreading, they are the reblooming ones.  I want to seperate them but I'm not sure when is the right and best time to do it.  I live in Zone 5 Ohio 43560.

Thank you,
Terri

Answer
If it is tall bearded iris (with the ginger looking rhizome) then split the rhizomes in mid august and replant immediately spaced 1 foot apart. Each rhizome sends out "fingers" and these fingers should be seperated from the (dead) center which can be discharded.

If you have siberian iris (looks like a hard dense wooden clump .. similar to ferns) should be seperated in spring. Just cut in between the individual eyes/sprouts and dig up the cut out clumps and move them.

Expertise

Can answer questions about spring and summer bulbs: selection, soil preparation, planting, fertilizing, designing with bulbs. I can also give references where to buy the bulbs and how to store them. Besides the typical bulbs (tulips, daffodils, amaryllis, lilies etc) I can also answer questions about other geophytes, such as tuberous begonia, dahlias, etc. When to start indoors, light requirement, etc. My experience is in cool season areas, but I can answer questions about warm season areas if given time to research matter.

Experience

Have worked with various bulbs (spring and summer bulbs). I am presently an allexpert advicer on the lawn message board also.
