Question
I am wondering if I could successfully grow stargazer lilies here in Ventura CA. The daylilies grow very well here. Thanks!

Answer
They may be difficult to reflower. Stargazers require a winter chilling period to rebloom. They are not as picky as tulips, daffodils and hyacinths, and one benefit is their ability to "remember" (e.g. cooling does not have to be consistent). However, some seasons do not get gold enough in Los Angels to provide enough cooling.

You could lift the bulbs in winter, after the foliage has died back, and put them in plastic bags with some slightly moist peatmoss sphagnum (or wooden shavings). The goal here is to keep the fleshy roots slightly damp but too much moisture and the bulbs rot. Store them 6 weeks or more in the bottom of the fridge and then replant.

Sometimes, gardeners in South Florida and Southern California report good result reblooming the stargazers, but most often it is not possible.

If you decide to plant them, provide protection for hot afternoon sun.

Expertise

Can answer questions about spring and summer bulbs: selection, soil preparation, planting, fertilizing, designing with bulbs. I can also give references where to buy the bulbs and how to store them. Besides the typical bulbs (tulips, daffodils, amaryllis, lilies etc) I can also answer questions about other geophytes, such as tuberous begonia, dahlias, etc. When to start indoors, light requirement, etc. My experience is in cool season areas, but I can answer questions about warm season areas if given time to research matter.

Experience

Have worked with various bulbs (spring and summer bulbs). I am presently an allexpert advicer on the lawn message board also.
