Question
I am a first time bulldog owner and need some advise on a few areas. Zues is 8 months old and is so smart. He has learned so many things so easily, but there are some things I am having trouble with.
First, I am having trouble getting him to behave around other people and animals. He is learning very well how to behave in the home with us, but as soon as someone comes in he jumps and licks like crazy. Also I cant get him leash trained. He bites it and flips around.
Second, he has this rash on his belly and back legs that started out red and bumpy. We gave him benadryl and it seemed to help a little. The bumps and itching have gone but the skin on his belly and back legs where the rash was has turnd black. Not sure if it is his skin changing as he gets older or something else.

Answer
Hello Alisa:
BEST wishes on your first bull dog!!
Ok as far as the leash training ( walking ) - here is a good link to review... You also may want to get into some foundations classes - training for older dogs that did not have any puppy preschool lessons.  You may be able to find a group that allows 8-10 dogs and parents... Many times they give a low rate for the type of training.

Next, as far as jumping on people when greeting.... here is a little something I suggested to someone last week:
When guests arrive, have him crated in a back area... That way he can't see the people arriving...  Next, after 15 minutes take him out and bring him to the guests.... on a leash.  Make sure he sits and waits before greeting the guests.  Hold him down with the leash and pressure close to his neck...   He many not want to Jump up so much if the arrival is LOW Key.... Everyone is very calm and sitting down.

As far as the rash - I wonder if it is environmental Allergies???? I would have the vet look at the areas because of the color changes...

BEST wishes with all -

Marie
