Bulldogs/bulldog puppy death

Question

Rocky
I'm writing with a heavy heart tonight.  My baby died today. He was to be 6 months old tomorrow.  I took Rocky to get neutered this morning.  About an hour and a half later I got a call from  the vet saying he died during the administering of the anestesia  I know that bulldogs are higher risk with anestesia...but I am truly heartbroken.  He was an amazing dog.  So loving and smart.  The vet has offered to do an autopsy.  I agreed to it, as to maybe spare any siblings of Rocky if there was something genetically wrong.  The vet has experiance with bullies, in fact I was refered by other bully owners to him.  Even drove 40 miles to him, I just wanted the best for my baby.  I always wanted a bulldog growing up.  Then after meeting the 2 nieghbor bullies I knew I had to have one.  I have Lupus and the Rocky was the perfect companion dog, so loyal and loving.  I called him my 50 pound lapdog.  He loved to walk...but not more than a mile or so, which is just enough for me with my lupus issues.  He was so beautiful... all white with a patch over his right eye.  His happy go lucky personality is a trait so many admired.
I guess my question...how often does this happen to bulldogs...was there any test I should have had done prior to the surgery to make sure he could handle anestesia?  I did have a complete blood panel this morning prior to the surgery, the vet said alll looked good.  Thank you for any insight.  RIP Rocky...

Answer
Oh Kim, I am so sorry for the loss of your boy Rocky.  YES, he was a good looking bullie!
This does happen often during surgery related to the anesthesia.  I am not sure on " how often " a bullie is lost during a proceedure.  The only thing you could have done was the blood panel testing to check liver function.  I see that your vet did do the blood work.
Sorry, I don't have much to add to your search for answers.  I wonder if you can call a few bulldog breeders and talk to them?  They may be able to answer you better than I.

Blessings to you!  I can't imagine what you are feeling right now...... Remember him always and keep him in your heart.

I will be thinking of you.
