Question

farley
Christine,  My English Bulldog, Farley, is 3 years old and is about 120 pounds!  His vet recommended that he be put on a diet dog food.  We have used Royal Canine for bulldogs from the time that he was a puppy and have not had any problems so we got the diet dog food for large dogs.  We started him on half of his new food and half of the old, and from 30 minutes after his first meal he has had severe diarrhea.  His little bum is raw and bleeding.  We have stopped food and gave immodium, but he continues to have diarrhea.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Natalie,

I don't think I have ever seen an English bulldog that was 120 lbs!!!  Wow!!!

Any change of food can cause diarrhea.  It should clear up, or you can try another brand of dog food.

Royal Canine is a good dog food.  Maybe you should just feed less of it.  Or are you saying that you are still feeding Royal Canine, but their food for over weight dogs?

Either way, it should clear up when his body gets used to the change.

I would not give the Immodium without checking with your vet to make sure it is OK to give dogs and for dosage.

If it doesn't clear up, or if it is watery, has blood in it or is gray in color, they you should see your vet.  You want to make sure he drinks a lot of water and does not get dehydrated.

You can give him baby electrolytes if you think he is getting dehydrated.

Again if it doesn't clear up, you should see your vet.
