Question
I have recently adopted my puppy and he tends to have more of the Bulldog temperament. I am wondering what is best to do for training purposes. He is 5 wks old right now and has a growling habit already when he doesn't get his way. He is still getting puppy teeth so I expect the biting but have been using the "NO" command and "Good Boy" when he does his duty outside. I have done some research on the bulldog and know they can be independent and stubborn. I just want to make sure I teach him right so I end up with a great dog. I have owned dogs before and am a partner in a Siberian Husky racing kennel but know all breeds are different. I feel I am up to the challenge with this one and hope to have a companion for the rest of his lifetime.
Thank You,
Holly

Answer
Hi Holly - Well, it sounds like you are doing a great job with your bulldog pup!  Yes, bullies are smart BUT stubborn.  Just keep teaching the Bite inhibition -

When a playful puppy bites Heather hard enough to hurt, she squeals in shocked indignation. The puppy, surprised at her reaction, usually hesitates a moment, unsure of himself, then tries to bite again. Heather yelps even louder this time and whirls on the puppy, growling, showing her teeth and scowling at him fiercely. Then she turns her back on him and storms away, completely ignoring him and any further attempts to get her to play. A smart puppy picks up her clear message quickly: "if you can't play nice, I won't play with you at all!"
