Burlington, Vermont - relocation advice

Expert: David Beckett - 10/18/2009

Question
Hi,I have read some of you older answers from '06 from an African American woman who was contemplating a move to Burlington.  Well, I am sort of looking for an update on the situation there. I am a 47 year old African American woman who is seriously considering relocation to Burlington, VT.  I don't need a job, my children are grown and am looking for a place where I can purchase some land - from a half acre - 3 acres that I can turn into an organic subsistence farm. I have lived most of my life in Minneapolis, MN, so I am not afraid of snow, cold or freezing winds.  I am wondering how many incidents of racial intolerance you hear about ...say in a year.
Also, I would like to know about the racial situation in the small towns around Burlington as I might be able to find my future microfarm there.  I am specifically interested in how safe it would be for a single black woman to live alone in the more rural areas around Burlington.
Thanks so much for your help.

Answer
Hello Cynthia!

Thanks for following up. I'll do my best to help.

My update on the situation is that I remain convinced the Greater Burlington Area is a terrific place to live, for anybody who's not afraid of seasons. Diversity here continues to grow and expand. While I hear about incidents of racial intolerance in Vermont, they remain the exception rather than the rule, thank goodness. There are now (and have been for decades) many organizations dedicated to encouraging diversity and combatting intolerance. Vermont is known for this. One example (of many) is the fact that the licensing authority for Realtors in the State Of Vermont required a formal study of Fair Housing a few years ago. So intolerance happens, but it's energetically fought on all sorts of fronts. This is one of the many and various reasons I'm proud and happy to live in Vermont.

Rather than attempt to write too much more in this post (there's actually a limit for the length of my response in a single answer), I'd be very happy to talk on the phone. If you'd like to email me, we can make a time to talk on the phone when it's convenient. I may be able to answer your questions and address your concerns better on the phone than I can by writing...Also - If you haven't visited The Burlington Area recently, I'd welcome a chance to show you the area by car, so you know the various towns and areas and get a better sense of the lay of the land. I can also introduce you to friends of mine who may be able to provide more perspective on all sorts of issues.

I also took a look in the MLS to give you an idea of what sort of property is presently on the market, seeming to meet the broad outline of your criteria. The first link is all the land offered presently in Chittenden County (which is essentially The Greater Burlington Area),  .5 acres to 3 acres. The second link is Houses on land, in Chittenden County. I had to make an arbitrary decision about a price range, simply because these links limit the number of properties I can send at one time...

I hope this helps, and I look forward to chatting with you. Just email me if you like, and we'll pick a good time to talk!

Sincerely,
David Beckett, Realtor, CBR
