Burlington, Vermont - Blue Collar Jobs and Taxes

Expert: David Beckett - 4/6/2009

Question
Hi David,

My husband and I plan to move to the Burlington area at the end of this summer.  I'll be working within the health care system.  However he works in fabrication - I've been doing some research, and I haven't seen a lot of "blue collar" job prospects in Burlington.  Is that true? Or am I just looking in the wrong places?

Also, I've been reading that Vermont has one of the highest tax rates in the country.  How does that effect the middle class family?

Thank you for your time!

Answer
Hello AJ -

Have you checked at the website of Vermont Business Magazine? They are a terrific resource. http://www.vermontbiz.com/ Thier print publications include a book of lists, a manufacturing directory and all sorts of other print resources. I subscribe to thier print edition and find it very helpful.

You question about the middle class family and taxes is perhaps harder to get a handle on. Vermont funds it's schools through property taxes. I believe you'd find people in VT typically find the schools very good and the property taxes high.

I'm happy to try to help with other questions or more specific ones.

...hope that helps.
