Burlington, Vermont/Engineer moving from the UK?
Expert: David Beckett - 1/13/2011
QuestionHi David,
Im a 36 y/o who has just decided to finish his education by going to University, however upon the completion of my degree in an Engineering discipline, I have no wish to remain in the UK as I feel that my family and I have become tourists within our own country. I really want to move to the US, and Vermont was high on the list as one of the nicer places to live because of its beautiful surroundings and its friendly people. Im a big ski fan since I went to Norway, so that aspect of Vermont appeals to me too. But what about work? Is there much engineering opportunities within Burlington and surrounding areas?
Chris
AnswerHi Chris -
There are a lot of UK expats here, for certain. Parts of Vermont have been compared more than once to The Lake District.
While the State Of Vermont enjoys a lower unemployment rate than the nation now, I think many people will tell you it's not easy to get a good job in Vermont. A lot of people bring them with them as entrepreneurs or telecommuters.
That having been said, we have a large IBM plant, a number of other high tech businesses, and a lot of small green energy companies.
I'd look at the usual places for Job postings: Vermont Business magazine, 7 Days, The Burlington Free Press, The State Of Vermont, and Vermont Job Link, for starters.
