Burlington, Vermont/Moving to Burlington
Expert: David Beckett - 5/21/2001
QuestionHi,
I'm moving to Burlington in August. I've only been in Burlington once, for an interview. I didn't spend much time sightseeing but from what I saw it seems like a nice place. I am apartment hunting now and I plan to take a good look around in a few weeks when I go there to look at apartments. What I would like to know is, are there any areas of Burlington where crime is high, or any sections of town that should generally be avoided?
AnswerHi Eliza-
There's an area called The Old North End of Burlington.
This is what passes for a high crime area in Burlington.
But in fact there's nowhere in the State I wouldn't walk alone after dark. The Old North End is the subject of some gentrification these days. But it's still the less desirable part of town in the minds of many people.
As a CBR (certified Buyer Agent) representing the purchaser in numerous real estate purchases over the last 11 years, I tell people if they have questions about any given area, call the police and ask neighbors. And of course I'll give my opinion but it's only my opinion. Typically North of Pearl Street is considered Old North End.
The Burlington Police non-emergency number is 802 658-2704.
Feel free to give me a shout when you come-I'll give you the nickel tour and give you a relocation package with lots of maps, brochures and helpful information.
nb-Burlington's residential vacancy rate is extremely low. Apartments are very very scarce and quite a bit more expensive than people from elsewhere are often expecting. Leave yourself some time to find a suitable place.
