Burlington, Vermont/Public schools: Burlington & Brattleboro
Expert: David Beckett - 8/28/2006
QuestionDavid,
I've read a few of your past answers, which were helpful. My eyes are swimming from researching so much!
We're moving to VT from the midwest and would love to know what the best public schools are in Burlington. I think my kids need strong academics (they attended a private "gifted" school before this) -- but would benefit greatly from the more progressive environment in the Northeast. Do students need to live within district or neighborhood boundaries to be able to attend certain schools?
Any suggestions? And do you know how Burlington schools compare to those in Brattleboro (elementary and middle)? Both towns seem engaging and full of interesting people/activities.
Also, any big difference in employment opportunities? I'm a freelancer, so I'm fine. My husband would need something in high tech or graphic design.
Thanks in advance for any information.

I'm afraid I simply don't know Brattleboro. Yes - with the exception of towns without High Schools, kids in different towns attend different schools - if I understand your question.
Now - Having said I don't know Brattleboro - I can give you an utterly partisan opinion about the two. I'm guessing Burlington offers more in the way of employment opportunities. It's just bigger. More of The Performing Arts too, and although it may seem strange - better and easier access to outdoor recreation.
I'm afraid the best I can do for school info is to reiterate this link. It's the best resource I'm aware of.

Here's another (admitedly partisan) angle on the whole thing. I really like being 90 pretty scenic-route miles from Montreal Canada. I can also get to Boston by car in 3.5 hours. NYC is a direct flight on Jet Blue.
Let me know when you're coming - I'll show you around Burlington if you like!
